Officer Leatherwood of Tuscaloosa PAL Builds Tech Center for Youth

Olympic gold and silver medalist, Officer Lillie Leatherwood of the Tuscaloosa Police Athletic League, is making great strides to change the lives of local youth. Since securing her silver medal in the 4x400 relay, she has taken on her most challenging duty yet, protecting and guiding Tuscaloosa youth.

Officer Leatherwood was assigned to the Tuscaloosa Police Athletic League in 1995 and still eagerly seeks opportunities to enrich youths' lives through athletics, mentorship, and academic aid. While attending a PAL after-school study-hall, she found a troubling trend after reviewing her mentee’s report cards. An overwhelming number of her mentee's grades were sub-standard.

After speaking with the youth, she found the reason that her mentees were struggling was that they had no access to a computer to conduct academic research, complete required assignments, or printer access.  In today's academic environment having access to a computer is essential to complete assignments.

Officer Leatherwood quickly searched for a means to fill the need and researched multiple avenues to obtain a computer lab for the PAL Chapter. She was informed about The Alabama Power Foundations grant for Civic and Community Development. The Chapter was awarded the funds for a brand new technology center furnished with 10 computer stations and a printer.

Thanks to the computer lab and National PAL mentoring academic aid programming, Tuscaloosa PAL youth have been able to complete academic research and assignments in a timely manner thus improving their grades.

Thank you, Officer Leatherwood, for being a prime example of a National PAL mentor and community leader!
